Extremely Rare. A brockage is a coin that shows its own obverse type, in incuse, on the reverse. This mint error resulted when a coin adhered to the reverse die after striking, so that the next planchet received an impression of the obverse type instead of its proper reverse type. Extremely Rare and undoubtedly the finest example known. This sestertius was altered in antiquity to serve as a miniature container. The reverse was hollowed out, preserving the edge, and then covered with a piece taken from a second sestertius depicting the triumphal arch. Such an object might have contained a mirror or confidential message, or have served as a portable sun dial. The weight indicates that it is presently empty inside. Attractive dark green patina. This extraordinary rarity was part of the empire-wide coinage celebrating the Roman victory in the Jewish War, achieved under the command of Vespasian and finally of Titus. What sets this piece apart is the remarkable style of its portrait of Vespasian. It is, if such a thing is possible, an idealizing portrait of an aged man. It shows the creases in his forehead, but the flesh of his cheeks is firm and his expression commanding. Attractive olive-green patina and of the finest style.

Very Rare. Trajan's construction of a bridge crossing the Danube was an important feat of Roman engineering. The coins commemorating this achievement do not depict the great bridge realistically, but rather symbolize it with a picturesque image that may represent one of its many spans. Lovely green patina. Extremely Rare. Among his many public works, Trajan renovated the Circus Maximus, oldest and largest of Rome's four racetracks. He repaired some damaged spots and expanded the seating capacity to accommodate 250,000 spectators. The rare sestertii commemorating this benefaction show the U-shaped exterior, the central divider (spina) adorned with three obelisks and an equestrian statue of Trajan, and, on the back wall, a shrine to Sol. Very Rare. This heavy aureus was struck for distribution on New Year's Day of 284 to celebrate Numerian's first consulship. Its Oriens (Orient) reverse alludes to the Persian campaign of 283-284. Numerian's father, Carus, had enjoyed striking military success against the Persians but suddenly died under suspicious circumstances. At the time of this issue, the young Numerian was in sole command of the war. No military man, he negotiated terms for an orderly withdrawal and soon died as mysteriously as his father, probably poisoned by one of his officers.
