JEWISH WAR
SOLD
AR Half Shekel (6.77gm) Year 4, 69/70 C.E. "Half a Shekel," chalice / "Jerusalem the Holy," stem with three fruits. Kadman pl. 3, 30 (same dies). TJC 209 (same dies). Hendin 666.
Extremely Rare. Fourth example known. The Year 4 coinage was struck at a time when the Romans had temporarily sus-pended their operations against Jerusalem. The coinage of this year was instead impacted by factional strife within the city, according to a new study of the Jewish War coinage by Isadore Goldstein and Jean-Philippe Fontanille, in ANAJ Vol. 1, No. 2 (Summer 2006). The Year 4 bronze coinage, with face values of a half, quarter and eighth, was minted by Simon bar Giora, leader of the Sicarii, who took control of most of Jerusalem in April of 69 C.E. The Temple precincts and treasury remained under the control of the Zealots, who continued the production of silver shekels and half shekels, but on a much reduced basis. The half shekels of Year 4 are enormously rare: Goldstein and Fontanille report only three examples, at least one of which is in a public collection. The figures for the preceding three years of the revolt indicate that half shekels were the first coins to be minted every year and that they were produced in very stable numbers, in order to provide for the payment of Temple dues. Full shekels came next and were issued in varying numbers to meet the needs of the Temple treasury. The drastic drop in pro-duction of the half shekel in Year 4 must reflect the deepening of hostilities within Jerusalem and the small number of Jews who still had access to the Temple. The half shekels of Year 4 were struck from three obverse and two reverse dies. Our coin is from the same dies as the British Museum specimen, O1/R1 on the Menorah Coin Project website. Ex private European collection. This great rarity is well centered on a full flan. good Very Fine/Extremely Fine Price on Request

JEWISH WAR
SOLD
AR Shekel (13.13gm) Year 5, March/April-August 70 C.E.
"Shekel of Israel," chalice / "Jerusalem the Holy," stem with three fruit. Kadman pl. 3, 45 (same dies). TJC 215. Hendin 671. Extremely Rare. The last year of the Jewish War lasted only four months. During this time, Titus and his army besieged Jerusalem, breached the city's outer wall, and attempted to penetrate the inner wall. The trapped inhabitants suffered terribly from famine, disease, and the violent clashes of the Jewish factions. The inner city finally fell and in early August of 70 C.E. the Temple was burned to the ground, its sacred vessels seized and carried off to Rome. Even amid these disasters a few survivors managed to escape to Masada, carrying with them Year 5 shekels that were discovered in the Masada excavations of the twentieth century. Coin production for Year 5 was naturally very low, resulting from the Zealots' control of the mint as well as the early fall of the Temple. Goldstein and Fontanille report only nine Year 5 shekels of the regular, refined style of the Temple mint. Of these, at least three are in public collections in Israel. The regular Year 5 shekels were struck from three obverse dies. Our shekel is from obverse die O1 on the Menorah Coin Project website. Other examples from the same die pair include the Bromberg and Reifenberg specimen (Bromberg sale II, lot 389), the Brand specimen (Brand Sale 3, lot 148), and the museum specimen illustrated by Kadman pl. 3, 45. Ex private European collection.

AR Tetradrachm (14.81gm) Hybrid Year 1/Year 2, struck 133/4 C.E. "Jerusalem," façade of the Temple with Ark of the Covenent within / "Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel," lulav with etrog. Mildenberg 9 (O1/R8).
Very Rare. This hybrid issue was struck from the very first obverse die of the Bar Kochba tetradrachm series, carried over into the second year of the revolt as indicated by the date on the reverse. Undertype visible. good Extremely Fine $13,750

BAR KOCHBA WAR
SOLD
AR Tetradrachm (14.60gm) Year 2, 133/4 C.E.
"Jerusalem," façade of the Temple with Ark of the Covenant within / "Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel," lulav with etrog. Mildenberg 16 (O4/R10). Extremely Rare (1 listed by Mildenberg). The earliest tetradrachm issues of the Jewish War feature the inscription "Jerusalem" on the obverse. This legend clearly identified the building depicted on the coins as the Temple in Jerusalem, and at the same time served as a rallying cry, for the holy city was still in Roman hands and its recovery and reconstruction of the Temple were the principal goals of the free Jewish nation. Full flan. Undertype slightly apparent. good Extremely Fine $9,500

AR Tetradrachm (14.04gm) Year 2, 133/4 C.E. "Shim'on," façade of the Temple with Ark of the Covenent within / "Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel," lulav with etrog. Mildenberg 29 (O6/R20).
Very Rare (3 listed by Mildenberg). The obverse die of this tetradrachm is the first to name Shim'on, the leader of the new Jewish state. Leo Mildenberg selected this die to illustrate the dust jacket of his book, The Coinage of the Bar Kokhba War. A well struck and fully centered piece. Superb $5,800

14C092
BAR KOCHBA WAR
SOLD
AR Tetradrachm (13.67gm). Year 2, 133/4 C.E. "Shim'on," façade of the Temple with Ark of the Covenent within / "Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel," lulav with etrog. Mildenberg 36 var. (O8/R26).
Mildenberg 36 was struck from obverse die O8 in its second state, showing a flaw on the third column from the left and the front of the balustrade ostensibly reengraved. Our example was struck from O8 in its first state, before the flaw appeared on the column. It implies that the correct order of the issues is 34, 36, 35 (with our coin slightly later than the illustrated example of Mildenberg 36) and that the balustrade was not in fact reengraved. Exceptional. good Extremely Fine $5,000

The reverse die of this tetradrachm has an unusual legend configuration, with six letters on the right and five on the left. It was employed in only two die combinations (the other is Mildenberg 56). Slight die shift on reverse. Superb $4,250

BAR KOCHBA WAR
AR Tetradrachm (14.40gm) Undated, 134/5 C.E.
"Shim'on," façade of the Temple with Ark of the Covenant within / "For the Freedom of Jerusalem," lulav with etrog. Mildenberg O13/R-. Extremely Rare (new reverse die). Mildenberg recorded eleven reverse dies paired with his obverse die O13. This obverse die exhibits a horizontal flaw across the Ark of the Covenant from its first appearance. The development of this flaw indicates that our new reverse die was employed around the same time as R37. The new issue probably belongs between Mildenberg 50 and 51.
