under neck truncation / Silenus seated facing on ground, head left, lifting cantharus to lips, ivy vine to left, herm to right. Cahn 107 (V70/R89). Ex Oskar Kokoschka collection. Extremely Rare. The aesthetically important coinage of Naxos involved only a few dies with an artist's signature. All belong to the last phase of the city's coinage, dated c. 420-403 B.C., and all are signed by the same die cutter. His full name, Procles, appears on a didrachm reverse die (Cahn R90) and also on a tetradrachm of Catana. Here his signature is abbreviated as a small ? under the neck. Traces of undertype after striking. Extremely Fine $14,500

SICILY
SOLD
AV 2 Litrae (1.76gm) winter 406/5 B.C. Signed on the obverse by IM.... Helmeted head of Athena left, die engraver's signature IM (inverted) under neck truncation / Aegis with gorgoneion. Boehringer, Essays Thompson, pl. 38, 12.
One of three known. This great rarity is not to be confused with the slightly more common gold piece with the same types, but weighing c. 67gm and lacking the artist's signature. Our dilitron belongs to a coordinated issue of emergency gold coinages produced at Agrigentum, Gela, and Syracuse late in 406 to finance the latter stages of the eight-month defense of Agrigentum, the first victim of the terrifying Carthaginian invasion of 406-405 B.C. The gold for these issues came from temple treasuries and even women's jewelry. However the artistic quality of our piece, including its signature, seems incongruous under the circumstances, while its companion 4-litra piece depicts an athlete, suggesting that Syracuse somehow managed to celebrate games amid the crisis. The types invoke Athena in her role as defender of Greek culture against barbarians. The artist Im... (or Mi...) also signed a slightly earlier gold issue and a contemporary Syracusan tetradrachm (Tudeer 67). Of the highest rarity and very fine style. good Extremely Fine $23,500

Gallatin O.IV/R.C.XV.
Very Rare and always highly desirable. In the impressive coinage of Syracusan decadrachms in the style of Euainetus, less than half the reverse dies bear the artist's signature. Good metal absent of die rust, obverse softly struck, otherwise Extremely Fine $22,500

Rare. The obverse die of this stater, which was also employed at Colophon, bears a portrait that stands apart from the usual depictions of Apollo on Philip staters. It differs in the patterns of the hair, the long nose, and the intense expression, all of which create affinities to the sculptured portraits of Alexander the Great. good Very Fine $3,950

SOLD
AV Distater (17.17gm) Macedonian mint, shortly before 323 B.C.

According to Price's classification, Alexander issued distaters from just three mints, "Amphipolis," Aegae(?), and Sidon. AV Mnaieon or One-Mina Piece (27.79gm) c. 170-116 B.C. Veiled head of deified Arsinoe II right, with ram's horn, wearing diademed stephane / Filleted double cornu-copiae. Svoronos 1498.
This extravagant gold denomination, popularly called an octadrachm, was known in antiquity as a one-mina piece because it was equivalent in value to a mina (100 drachms) of silver. Coins of such high value were well suited to be given as prizes to artists and victorious athletes, and to be distributed to courtiers on festive occasions. A wonderful example, well struck, leaving a mirror-like surface and absent of the usual grafitto. FDC $19,500
