VABALATHUS

Bil Antoninianus (3.27gm) Antioch or Emesa, spring-summer 272 A.D.

Radiate and draped bust of Vabalathus right /Victory advancing left. RIC 6.

Very Rare. When Aurelian declared war on Palmyra in spring of 272, Vabalathus claimed the title of Augustus. Coins of this brief usurpation, like the present piece, are far more rare than the joint issues.
