AV Aureus (7.19gm) Rome, struck by Antoninus Pius, 138-161 A.D.

Diademed and draped bust of Faustina Jr. right / Venus standing left. Kent-Hirmer 327 (same obverse die).

The emperor's daughter is portrayed in high relief, with elegant hair dressing that adapts the melon coiffure of the Hellenistic age. Faustina's face is framed by parallel waves, and her head is adorned by a double band of pearls that winds into and around her chignon.
