TRAJAN

Æ Sestertius (24.87gm) Rome, 103 A.D.

Laureate head of Trajan right, with aegis / Circus Maximus. RIC 571.

Extremely Rare. Among his many public works, Trajan renovated the Circus Maximus, oldest and largest of Rome's four racetracks. He repaired some damaged spots and expanded the seating capacity to accommodate 250,000 spectators. The rare sestertii commemorating this benefaction show the U-shaped exterior, the central divider (spina) adorned with three obelisks and an equestrian statue of Trajan, and, on the back wall, a shrine to Sol. A lovely glossy green patina. Bold and clear details of the Circus Maximus.
