NERO

Æ Sestertius-box (19.24gm) Lugdunum, 67 A.D.

Laureate head of Nero left / Triumphal arch. Cf. RIC 573. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 11, 29 April 1998, lot 392.

Extremely Rare and undoubtedly the finest example known. This sestertius was altered in antiquity to serve as a miniature container. The reverse was hollowed out, preserving the edge, and then covered with a piece taken from a second sestertius depicting the triumphal arch. Such an object might have contained a mirror or confidential message, or have served as a portable sun dial. The weight indicates that it is presently empty inside.

Attractive dark green patina. Extremely Fine $8,950
