BAR KOCHBA WAR

AR Tetradrachm (13.67gm). Year 2, 133/4 C.E. .

"Shim'on," façade of the Temple with Ark of the Covenent within / "Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel," lulav with etrog. Mildenberg 36 var. (O8/R26).

Mildenberg 36 was struck from obverse die O8 in its second state, showing a flaw on the third column from the left and the front of the balustrade ostensibly reengraved. Our example was struck from O8 in its first state, before the flaw appeared on the column. It implies that the correct order of the issues is 34, 36, 35 (with our coin slightly later than the illustrated example of Mildenberg 36) and that the balustrade was not in fact reengraved.
