BAR KOCHBA WAR

AR Tetradrachm (14.60gm) Year 2, 133/4 C.E.

"Jerusalem," façade of the Temple with Ark of the Covenant within / "Year 2 of the Freedom of Israel," lulav with etrog. Mildenberg 16 (O4/R10).

Extremely Rare (1 listed by Mildenberg). The earliest tetradrachm issues of the Jewish War feature the inscription "Jerusalem" on the obverse. This legend clearly identified the building depicted on the coins as the Temple in Jerusalem, and at the same time served as a rallying cry, for the holy city was still in Roman hands and its recovery and reconstruction of the Temple were the principal goals of the free Jewish nation.

Full flan. Undertype slightly apparent.
