CAPPADOCIAN KINGDOM, ARIARATHES VII
AR Tetradrachm (16.51gm) c. 110-99 B.C.
Diademed
head of Ariarathes VII right / Athena standing left, holding Nike.
Mørkholm, SNR 57, pl. 42, 14.
Very Rare. This
coin of the child-king Ariarathes VII was probably struck around
the time his uncle, Mithradates VI of Pontus, invaded Cappadocia,
drove out the queen-regent and her new husband (Nicomedes III of
Bithynia), and placed Ariarathes on the throne as sole ruler.
