14C047
PERSIAN SATRAPS OF IONIA,
MEMNON OF RHODES(?)

AR Tetradrachm (14.96gm) Ephesus(?), c. 340 B.C.

Great King running right, holding bow and transverse spear / Oblong incuse with stippled surface, containing irregular raised pattern. Traité II, 75.

Very Rare. The reverse type has been identified as a map of the hinterland of Ephesus, showing the valleys of the rivers Caÿster and Meander and various mountains. If this interpretation is correct, this is the earliest preserved Greek map, remarkably precocious in its use of relief.

Exceptional example on a large flan.
