KINGS OF THRACE, LYSIMACHUS

AV Stater (8.49 gm)
Lysimachia(?), 297-281 B.C.

Diademed head of deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena enthroned left, holding Nike. Muller 344. Thompson 8 var.

Rare. Lysimachus, one of Alexander's companions, received a share of the conqueror's kingdom after his death, but failed to establish a dynasty. Nevertheless many cities of northwest Asia Minor and the Black Sea kept his coin types alive for up to two centuries after his death. Gold staters from Lysimachus' lifetime are much scarcer than the posthumous imitations.

Lustrous and with pleasing style. Superb
