14C017
MACEDONIAN KINGDOM, ALEXANDER III THE GREAT

AV Distater (17.17gm)
Macedonian mint, shortly before 323 B.C.

Helmeted head of Athena right / Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis, thunderbolt to left. Price 191.

Very Rare. According to Price's classification, Alexander issued distaters from just three mints, "Amphipolis," Aegae(?), and Sidon. Troxell's subsequent study of Alexander's Macedonian coinage suggested that this variety should be reattributed from Aegae to the chief Macedonian gold mint, probably Pella.
