AV Stater (8.48gm)
Magnesia on Meander, under Philip III, c. 323-317 B.C.

Laureate head of Apollo right, with features of Alexander / Fast biga right, bee under horses. Thompson, Studia Naster, 4 (same obverse die).

Rare. The obverse die of this stater, which was also employed at Colophon, bears a portrait that stands apart from the usual depictions of Apollo on Philip staters. It differs in the patterns of the hair, the long nose, and the intense expression, all of which create affinities to the sculptured portraits of Alexander the Great.
