HAND AND FOREARM

Egypt, early Ptolemaic period, circa 300 B.C.
Wood, Length: 14 cm.

The finely carved hand is extended as if in supplication, with fine details of the nails and cuticles clearly visible. The lower end has a tenon for attachment to a statuette, presumably representing a goddess. Traces of gesso and pigment remain.

For com-parison, see: W. Seipel, Ägypten: Götter, Gräber und die Kunst. 4000 Jahre Jenseits-glaube (Linz, 1989), nos. 122 and 123.
